Standard refrigerated Containers feature doors only at the rear, whereas side-opening refrigerated containers incorporate large-format door structures on the side of the unit. While both types offer refrigeration, thermal insulation, and maritime transport capabilities, they differ in terms of sealing performance, loading and unloading methods, and suitable cargo types. To help you select the right refrigerated container, we provide a detailed comparison of the two.
I. Structural Design Differences
Standard Refrigerated Containers
Feature double doors only at the rear; side walls are solid, seamless units.
Insulation layers are continuous and intact, ensuring stable sealing performance.
Standardized T-bar flooring and Refrigeration Unit layout; rapid cooling capabilities.
Side-Opening Refrigerated Containers
Feature both rear doors and large side doors; side doors are equipped with multiple hinges, locking bars, and sealing gaskets.
Side door openings interrupt the insulation layer; seams create potential thermal weak points and multiple sealing interfaces, resulting in higher long-term maintenance costs.
Mostly SOC (Shipper-Owned Container) units; flooring is often customized to a flat surface, with modifications typically tailored to specific project requirements.
II. Temperature Control and Sealing Comparison
1. Standard Refrigerated Container
The unit has virtually no extra seams, resulting in low heat leakage risk and excellent temperature stability. It is ideal for long-haul ocean voyages and is the preferred choice for frozen goods or cargo requiring precise, deep-freeze temperature control.
2. Side-Opening Refrigerated Container
The side door’s sealing gasket is a critical weak point. Opening the side door significantly disrupts the internal temperature; if the seal wears down, continuous heat infiltration causes temperature fluctuations. These containers are better suited for short-duration transport or use as refrigerated storage units; they are not recommended for cargo that is extremely sensitive to temperature variations.
III. Loading and Unloading Differences
Advantages of Side-Opening Reefers
Full side access allows forklifts to enter directly from the side. Oversized, bulky, or coiled cargo does not need to be slowly pushed in from the rear, significantly boosting loading/unloading efficiency and preventing damage to interior walls and ventilated flooring caused by dragging heavy items.
Drawbacks
Side-opening operations require specific terminal space and forklift maneuvering room; rapid temperature loss occurs during operation.

IV. Cargo Suitability
Suitable for side-opening refrigerated containers:
large palletized cargo, long-format cold chain goods, and cold chain cargo that is inconvenient to load or unload from the rear.
Not recommended for:
deep-frozen goods, pharmaceuticals or high-end fresh produce that cannot tolerate any temperature fluctuations; standard refrigerated containers are preferred for long-haul transoceanic routes.
Our container factory offers standard refrigerated shipping containers in a full range of sizes and also accepts low-MOQ orders for customized refrigerated containers—such as side-opening models, rapid-cooling units with multiple refrigeration systems, modular refrigerated containers, and more. If standard containers do not meet your specific requirements, please contact us to discuss the details; our professional design and service teams are ready to assist you.
