Tangshan, Hebei, China – September 1, 2026 – Electric suspended platforms. Gondolas. Suspended working platforms. Common on high-rise facade work, window installation, exterior maintenance. Correct operation is critical. Both for productivity and safety. Improper use is one of the leading causes of incidents.
1. Pre-Operation Inspection
Every shift. Before anyone steps on the platform. A thorough check matters.
Wire ropesLook for fraying, kinks, broken wires, corrosion. A broken wire here and there? That’s normal. But if you see six or more broken wires in one lay length, or rust pitting on the surface, that rope is done. Replace it. One supervisor I talked to said he runs his hand along the rope every morning. You can feel flat spots and rough patches before you see them.
Hoists and motorsListen for unusual noise. Feel for overheating. Check for oil leaks. Any of those means stop and check.
Safety devicesDual brakes. Overload sensors. Limit switches. Emergency stop button. Test each one. Know they work before you go up.
Platform structureGuardrails, anti-slip deck. Damage? Deformation? Missing bolts? Guardrails should be at least 1.0m high, with a mid-rail. If the deck has a hole or a loose section, that’s a fall risk.
Electrical cables and connectionsWear, exposed wires, loose plugs. Water ingress is common on wet days – check covers and seals.
Counterweights and suspension pointsMatch manufacturer requirements. Counterweights must be securely fixed. Loose weights shift during operation. Bad.
2. Installation and Setup
InstallationTrained personnel only. Follow manufacturer instructions. Follow site-specific design. Verify suspension points. Adequate load capacity for the working load. Wire ropes properly reeved and tensioned. Incorrect reeving can cause rope slip. Not good.
CounterweightsSecurely fixed. Calculated based on platform load. Use a checklist. Don’t guess.
No-load test run before useRun the platform up and down empty. Check smooth operation. Check limit switches stop at top and bottom. Emergency stop works. Both hoists run at similar speed. If one runs faster, platform tilts. Safety issue.
3. Safe Operating Rules
Authorized OperatorsOnly trained, authorized operators.
Rated Load CapacityNever exceed rated load capacity. That includes workers, tools, materials. Rate is usually 500-800kg for mid-sized units. Check the plate.
Load DistributionDistribute loads evenly across the platform. One heavy tool at one end causes tilting.
Hoist OperationOperate both hoists at similar speeds. Keep platform level. Control box usually has joystick or buttons. Smooth operation.
Movement ControlAvoid sudden starts, stops, high speed. That stresses ropes and hoists.
Facade ClearanceKeep platform clear of the building facade. Prevent collisions. Use rollers or bumpers if available.
Wind LimitsWind. Stop work if wind exceeds manufacturer limit. Usually 12-15 m/s. Some units have wind monitors that auto-stop. If not, watch flags and trees. One site in Chicago had a gust hit 14 m/s. Platform swayed enough to hit the glass. Lucky it didn’t crack. They shut down after that.
Personal SafetyThree points of contact when moving on platform. Full-body harness. Lanyard attached to designated anchor point. No exceptions.
4. During Work
Platform MonitoringMonitor platform continuously. Listen for unusual noises. Feel for vibrations. Watch for uneven movement. Any of these means stop. Inspect.
Secure MaterialsSecure materials and tools. Nail guns, sealant tubes, glass panels. Everything can fall. Use tool lanyards.
CommunicationKeep communication clear. Platform operators to ground personnel. To roof personnel. Radios or hand signals. Both work if everyone knows the plan.
5. Emergency Procedures
Emergency Stop & DescentKnow how to activate emergency stop. Know manual descent. Power failure happens. Manual descent lets you come down. Usually hydraulic or hand-pump operated. Slow and controlled.
Hoist FailureHoist failure. Rope problem. Stay calm. Stay secured by harness. Wait for rescue. Site emergency plan tells you what to do. Follow it.
Manual WinchIf the platform is stuck at a floor level and power is out, roof crew can use the manual winch to bring it down. Practice this drill before you need it.
6. After Use and Maintenance
Shift End RoutineEnd of each shift. Lower platform to a safe position. Ground level or at a landing. Clean debris. Inspect again. Wire ropes checked for damage. Properly stored if not used. Rain and sun damage ropes over time.
Regular MaintenanceRegular maintenance. Manufacturer schedule. Lubrication. Brake testing. Electrical checks. A platform that’s not maintained is a platform that fails.
