Miami-based fashion entrepreneur Sofia Symonds says confidence comes from understanding your own style, not keeping up with every trend.
Fashion has never moved faster. New trends appear daily across social media, and many disappear just as quickly. While this constant stream of inspiration gives people more choices than ever, fashion entrepreneur and former model Sofia Symonds believes it is also making it harder for individuals to develop a personal sense of style.
Rather than encouraging people to buy more or constantly reinvent themselves, Symonds says the fashion industry has an opportunity to remind people that confidence starts with authenticity.
“Fashion should help you express who you are, not pressure you to become someone else,” said Symonds. “The people who leave the biggest impression usually aren’t wearing exactly what everyone else is wearing. They’ve taken the time to understand what feels natural to them.”
Her perspective comes from years of working across different areas of the fashion industry. After beginning her modeling career in Morocco, Symonds relocated to Miami in 2012 to pursue international opportunities. She later studied fashion design and launched her own fashion brand, Bellarini, combining creative design with entrepreneurship.
Recent research suggests that younger consumers are also becoming more intentional about how they approach fashion. According to a 2024 Pinterest Predicts report, consumers are increasingly embracing personal aesthetics instead of following one dominant trend, reflecting a broader shift toward individuality and self-expression.
Symonds believes that change is encouraging because personal style develops over time rather than through impulse purchases.
“Some of the best style inspiration comes from living your life, traveling, meeting different people, and experiencing different cultures,” she said. “Those experiences influence the way you see beauty far more than scrolling through trends for a few minutes.”
She also encourages people to think about clothing as a form of communication rather than simply something to consume.
“When you stop asking, ‘Is this trending?’ and start asking, ‘Does this feel like me?’ your relationship with fashion changes completely,” Symonds said. “You become much more confident in your decisions because they’re based on your own perspective.”
Research continues to highlight why that confidence matters. A 2024 report from Dove found that many young women continue to experience appearance-related pressure driven by social media and unrealistic beauty expectations. Mental health experts have increasingly encouraged individuals to focus on self-expression and authenticity instead of comparison.
Symonds believes the same mindset applies beyond fashion.
“Personal style is really about self-awareness,” she said. “Once you become comfortable making choices that reflect your own values instead of someone else’s expectations, that confidence carries into other parts of your life as well.”
She encourages anyone feeling overwhelmed by constantly changing trends to spend a week wearing outfits they genuinely enjoy instead of dressing for likes, algorithms, or outside opinions. Paying attention to what feels comfortable and authentic, she says, is often the first step toward building lasting confidence.
