After a year spent traveling throughout Asia, travel content creator David Mondore is encouraging travelers to look beyond capital cities and major tourist gateways when planning their trips.
David Mondore, an American expat based in Osaka, Japan, has traveled extensively through Japan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Philippines. Along the way, David Mondore found that many of his most memorable experiences came from destinations outside the cities that typically dominate international travel itineraries.
“Tokyo is incredible, but everyone who visits me ends up liking Osaka more,” David Mondore said. “People in Osaka are louder, faster, more extroverted. It’s far more foreigner-friendly, which makes it easier to actually connect with locals.”
Living in Osaka has given David Mondore a firsthand perspective on the differences between visiting a major destination and spending enough time somewhere to understand how people actually live. That experience has increasingly shaped the way David Mondore approaches travel elsewhere in Asia.
Thailand provided one of the clearest examples. David Mondore originally planned to spend only a few days in Chiang Mai during a two-month trip through the country. Instead, he stayed for five weeks.
Surrounded by mountains and offering access to temples, villages, nightlife, food, and outdoor experiences, Chiang Mai became one of David Mondore’s favorite destinations in Asia.
“Thai people might be the friendliest I’ve ever met,” David Mondore said. “They’re genuinely warm. Chiang Mai was supposed to be a short stop, and I ended up staying for more than a month.”
David Mondore saw variations of the same pattern while traveling through Vietnam and the Philippines. Rather than assuming the largest or most internationally recognized city will provide the best experience, David Mondore recommends that travelers consider smaller cities, regional destinations, and islands that offer a different perspective on the country.
For David Mondore, the lesson is not that travelers should avoid cities such as Tokyo, Bangkok, Ho Chi Minh City, or Manila. Instead, travelers who only visit the most obvious destinations may leave without experiencing the places they would have enjoyed most.

“I’ve learned not to assume the biggest city is going to be my favorite place,” David Mondore said. “Some of the best experiences happen when you go beyond the obvious itinerary and give another place a chance.”
