SHOUXIAN, China – October 1<\/strong>4<\/strong>, 2026 – <\/strong>During China’s National Day and Mid-Autumn Festival holiday, Shouxian County in Anhui Province launched a cultural tourism season themed “Visit the Ancient City of Shouzhou, Embark on a Journey to the Moon.” Bringing scenes and imagery from the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala to life, the county organized 31 activities across four themes: performances, historical exploration, moon-themed experiences, and the traditional folk custom of Moqiu. The program offered visitors a full day of cultural experiences, from exploring the ancient city’s rich heritage by day to enjoying lively celebrations after dark. The festivities brought renewed energy to the centuries-old city and attracted a surge of holiday visitors.<\/p>\n

The Mid-Autumn Festival Gala helped draw growing crowds to the ancient city. Building on the popularity of locations featured in the televised celebration, Shouxian continued to stage traditional-themed live performances and distinctive attractions, including the “Chu Phoenix Bearing the Character for Longevity” light and shadow show. These activities turned the attention generated by the gala into immersive experiences that visitors could enjoy firsthand. During the holiday, Shouxian welcomed a total of 2.045 million tourist visits from across China, providing a strong boost to local cultural tourism spending.<\/p>\n

A series of creative events brought fresh energy to the local tourism and consumer scene. On Mid-Autumn Festival night, the spectacular “Moonrise over Shouchun” Torch Carnival saw ten thousand people holding flaming torches in a celebration inspired by the centuries-old local folk tradition of Moqiu. On National Day, the original musical The Great Anfengtang was staged at the Shouzhou Ancient City Visitor Center. Combining music, drama, and theatrical performance, the production retold the story of Sun Shuao, an ancient statesman renowned for his water management projects and efforts to improve people’s lives, bringing the 2,600-year-old story of Anfengtang from historical records to the stage. On October 5, a grand tofu banquet designed for 1,000 people featured 138 long tables arranged to form the Chinese characters for “Shouzhou.” A giant block of tofu weighing 3,000 jin (approximately 1,500 kilograms) was another highlight. Visitors sampled specialty tofu dishes known as the “Six Flavors of Shouzhou” and tried their hand at grinding soybeans to make soy milk and preparing tofu. A master of intangible cultural heritage also demonstrated the intricate knife skills used to create chrysanthemum-shaped tofu.<\/p>\n

Intangible cultural heritage performances added to the festive atmosphere throughout the ancient city. During the National Day holiday, traditional performances and food markets filled its streets and public spaces. The powerful rhythms of Shouzhou drums and gongs echoed through the streets, while the remarkable balancing skills and elaborate displays of the Taige and Zhouge folk performances drew enthusiastic applause. These living traditions gave visitors a chance to see, hear, and experience the region’s cultural heritage up close, adding another dimension to the city’s lively nighttime attractions.<\/p>\n

From the filming locations of the Mid-Autumn Festival Gala to the grand tofu banquet, and from original musical productions to evening tours of the ancient city, Shouxian is turning the attention generated by a major televised event into lasting tourism appeal. In doing so, the county is breathing new life into its ancient heritage and strengthening its appeal as a cultural destination.<\/p>\n
