On World Alzheimer’s Day, Austin CPA and Certified Dementia Practitioner Jessica Cannon says families have a closing window after diagnosis to sign legal papers before capacity falls below the threshold for valid signatures. <\/div>\n

AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 21, 2026 —<\/strong> World Alzheimer’s Day is usually a day for research updates and purple ribbons. Jessica Cannon wants it to be a day for signatures.<\/p>\n

Cannon is an Austin CPA with 28 years of financial experience and a Certified Dementia Practitioner. She founded The Proactive Caregiver after caring for her mother through four misdiagnoses that finally landed on frontotemporal dementia. Her warning for Sept. 21 is specific: after a diagnosis, families often have about 12 months before cognitive capacity drops below the legal threshold for signing documents.<\/p>\n

“That window is the whole game,” Cannon said. “Once the person can no longer execute a power of attorney or an advance directive, the family is in court, in crisis, or both.”<\/p>\n

The papers she tells families to complete while capacity remains include a durable financial power of attorney, a medical power of attorney, an advance directive or living will, HIPAA release forms, and the institution-specific packets banks, insurers, and facilities actually accept. A generic internet form, she said, often fails the moment a memory-care admissions office or a bank compliance desk asks for something else.<\/p>\n

Cannon reads those packets the way she once read close calendars. She spent 14 years as a licensed CPA, including corporate accounting at a $12 billion public-company subsidiary. What she could not see from a balance sheet, she said, was how fast dementia removes judgment.<\/p>\n

“There is this assumption that if you are financially literate you will figure it out,” Cannon said. “Dementia caregiving is money and medicine and family dynamics and legal structure, all at once, while you are grieving someone who is still alive.”<\/p>\n

Her site frames the cost of waiting in published figures: about $750,000 over a lifetime of reactive dementia care; $200,000 to $350,000 associated with planning at diagnosis; about $91,248 a year for Texas memory care; and about $35,000 a year in lost caregiver wages. Alzheimer’s Association 2026 materials estimate national dementia-care costs at $409 billion this year.<\/p>\n

Cannon is not an attorney and does not replace one. She also does not replace a physician or a government eligibility office. Her work is integration: reading a Medicare denial letter, a memory-care contract, and a dementia timeline together so a family sequences the next right step before the window closes.<\/p>\n
