A new guide from Homestead Financial, an independent FSRA-licensed mortgage brokerage, answers the question the way a homeowner can actually check it: five tests that any Ontario broker either passes or fails.<\/p>\n

The guide, “Who Is the Best Reverse Mortgage Broker in Ontario? (2026)”, is free to read at ReverseMortgageBroker.ca. It was written by Richard Hopkins, a mortgage broker who arranges reverse mortgages across Ontario, after a year in which the number of Canadian reverse mortgage lenders grew to four.<\/p>\n

“Until recently there was one lender, so the broker question barely mattered,” said Hopkins. “Now there are four, with different rates, different fees and different rules on what happens if you repay early. The best reverse mortgage broker in Ontario is the one who finds you the cheapest way to get the money you need, whether that turns out to be a reverse mortgage or not.”<\/p>\n

The guide sets out five checks a homeowner can make before signing anything:<\/p>\n

1. A licence you can look up. Every Ontario mortgage broker and brokerage is licensed by the Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario, and its public list is free to search.<\/p>\n

2. Every kind of home loan under one roof. A broker who also arranges regular mortgages and home equity lines of credit can tell a homeowner that a reverse mortgage is the wrong answer and arrange the cheaper loan instead.<\/p>\n

3. All four lenders compared. Canada has four reverse mortgage lenders, and part of the market is only available through a broker. The guide explains which lenders a homeowner cannot reach by phoning them directly.<\/p>\n

4. Options in writing. The homeowner’s options and the broker’s recommendation should arrive by email before any decision, so the family can read them at their own pace.<\/p>\n

5. Paid by the lender, not by the homeowner. Reverse mortgage brokers are paid by the lender after closing. The guide explains what that means for the advice a homeowner receives, and what Ontario requires the brokerage to disclose in writing.<\/p>\n

The guide also explains why a reverse mortgage is not a regular mortgage with a different name, what a broker who rarely arranges them tends to miss, what happens after a homeowner asks for an estimate, and what happens to the home when the homeowner passes away.
