The study also found that the average private well in the region had gone 4.2 years between water tests — more than four times the annual interval recommended by the EPA for private systems — with the longest gaps concentrated in older rural properties where families assume clear-looking water is safe until a pump fails, an appliance corrodes, or a household member gets sick.<\/p>\n
