United States-based general surgeon Ian Reight is encouraging healthcare professionals, patients, and families to strengthen communication and teamwork, arguing that better conversations remain one of the most powerful tools for improving patient care.<\/div>\n

General surgeon and healthcare leader Ian Reight is raising awareness about the need to place communication, teamwork, and patient understanding at the center of modern healthcare, even as medical technology continues advancing at a rapid pace.<\/p>\n

Drawing on a career that includes serving as a former chief of surgery, former medical staff president, former medical director of a breast center, former medical director of wound care and hyperbaric medicine, and lead robotic surgeon, Reight believes healthcare performs best when innovation is paired with clear communication and collaborative leadership.<\/p>\n

“Technology gives us better tools, but communication, preparation, and teamwork determine how well those tools are used,” Reight said. “Healthcare is about people first.”<\/p>\n

Reight’s perspective was shaped long before he entered an operating room. Growing up in Maryland, he volunteered as a firefighter and paramedic, where he learned the value of staying calm during emergencies.<\/p>\n

“I learned early that people look for calm leadership when things become difficult,” he said. “If everyone reacts emotionally, nobody is solving the problem.”<\/p>\n

His message comes at a time when healthcare systems continue facing significant challenges. According to the Association of American Medical Colleges, the United States could face a shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036. Meanwhile, the American Medical Association reported that 43.2% of physicians experienced at least one symptom of burnout in 2024. Research from The Joint Commission has also consistently identified communication failures as one of the leading contributing factors in many serious patient safety events.<\/p>\n

Reight says these challenges highlight why communication deserves as much attention as clinical expertise.<\/p>\n

“Patients remember whether you listened long after they forget the technical details,” he said. “That doesn’t replace medical skill, but it strengthens trust, and trust improves care.”<\/p>\n

Throughout his career, Reight has embraced innovation, including robotic surgery, while maintaining that technology should always support better patient outcomes rather than becoming the goal itself.<\/p>\n

“When new technology appears, people naturally hesitate,” Reight said. “The important question is whether it helps patients.”<\/p>\n

He believes healthcare leaders must also understand the entire system rather than focusing only on individual departments.<\/p>\n

“You cannot understand healthcare by looking at one department,” he explained. “You have to understand how everything connects.”<\/p>\n
