He believes those qualities are becoming harder to find in modern life.

“I think growing up in Alaska taught me how to notice small details,” said Tirmizi. “You pay attention to tracks in the snow, changes in the weather, sounds in the trees. That way of observing never left me.”

The pledge comes as concerns about digital overload continue to grow. According to Common Sense Media, teenagers average more than eight hours of entertainment screen time daily. Research from the American Psychological Association has found that nearly half of Gen Z adults report feeling overwhelmed by stress most of the time. Studies have also linked excessive screen use to decreased attention spans, increased anxiety, and reduced participation in creative hobbies.

“Art gave me direction when I was younger,” Tirmizi said. “It taught me discipline. It taught me how to focus. More importantly, it gave me something real to build.”

Tirmizi says the goal is not to reject technology but to encourage people to make intentional space for creativity and reflection.

“Everything moves so fast now,” he said. “A lot of people feel like they need instant attention or instant success. But creativity takes time. Skill takes time. You have to let yourself develop naturally.”

He added, “People should spend more time making things with their hands. Drawing. Painting. Writing. Anything that helps you slow down and think for yourself.”

The Create More, Scroll Less Personal Pledge

As part of the initiative, Tirmizi is making seven personal commitments:

1. Create Something Every Day

Spend at least 30 minutes daily drawing, painting, writing, or working on a creative project.

2. Schedule Screen-Free Time

Set aside one hour each day without social media, entertainment apps, or unnecessary screen use.

3. Spend Time Outdoors Weekly

Reconnect with nature through walks, hikes, park visits, or simply spending quiet time outside.

4. Practice Observation

Carry a notebook and regularly record interesting details, ideas, or observations from daily life.

5. Prioritize Craft Over Trends

Focus on developing skills and personal growth rather than chasing online validation.

6. Support Independent Creativity

Engage with local artists, creators, musicians, writers, and community arts initiatives.

7. Reflect Before Reacting

Create space for thoughtful reflection before responding to constant online noise and distractions.

Why This Matters Right Now

Teenagers average 8+ hours of daily entertainment screen time.

Nearly 50% of Gen Z adults report frequent stress and overwhelm.

Creative participation among younger Americans has declined over the past decade.

Mental health professionals continue to identify digital overload as a growing concern.

Studies show creative hobbies can improve focus, emotional well-being, and resilience.

Do It Yourself Toolkit

Anyone can participate without spending money.

10 Simple Actions

Draw for 15 minutes.

Write one page in a journal.

Take a walk without headphones.

Visit a local park.

Watch a sunrise or sunset.

Sketch an everyday object.

Read a chapter of a book.

Leave your phone in another room for an hour.

Create something without posting it online.

Spend 10 minutes observing and documenting your surroundings.

Call to Action

Iman Ali Tirmizi invites individuals, artists, students, professionals, and community members to take the Create More, Scroll Less Pledge, practice at least one action from the toolkit each day, and share the toolkit with friends, family, and colleagues. The goal is simple: make more time for creativity, reflection, and meaningful experiences.

To read the full interview, visit the website here.

About Iman Ali Tirmizi

Iman Ali Tirmizi is a Chicago-based tattoo artist and oil painter originally from Alaska.
