As Vietnam’s coffee industry enters a new phase shaped by traceability requirements and sustainability standards from Europe, agricultural enterprises are increasingly investing in high-tech agricultural models.

In Gia Lai, one of the key coffee-growing provinces in the Central Highlands, agricultural technology company FarmBlock has begun operating a large-scale digital farming model designed to support exports and meet international market requirements.

Vietnam is the world’s second-largest coffee exporter after Brazil and the largest supplier of Robusta coffee, accounting for more than 40% of global Robusta supply. The country holds the leading position in both the production and export of Robusta coffee, making it a critical player in the international coffee market.

However, as importing markets place increasing emphasis on transparency and sustainability, production volume alone is no longer enough to maintain a competitive edge. New regulations, including the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), are imposing stricter requirements on traceability, farm-level data and the ability to demonstrate compliance throughout the supply chain.

Against this backdrop, agricultural companies across Vietnam are accelerating investments in technology and data infrastructure to strengthen their position in global markets. In Gia Lai Province, one of the Central Highlands’ key coffee-growing regions, FarmBlock is developing a large-scale high-tech agriculture model that combines data-driven farm management with efforts to meet increasingly stringent export market requirements.

Vietnam’s Coffee Industry Faces New Transformation Pressure

According to data from Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade, the country exported approximately 154,635 tons of coffee in January 2026 alone, generating more than USD 1 billion in export revenue, an increase of over 100% in value compared to the same period last year. The average export price reached nearly USD 6,800 per ton, reflecting continued strong global demand for Vietnamese coffee.

Vietnam is currently the world’s second-largest Robusta coffee exporter, accounting for roughly 40% of global Robusta supply. However, despite its production strength, the industry continues to face challenges related to fragmented supply chains, inconsistent data systems and limited traceability infrastructure.

These pressures are expected to intensify as the European Union moves toward full implementation of the EU Deforestation Regulation (EUDR). Under the regulation, agricultural products imported into the EU, including coffee, must prove they are not linked to deforestation activities after December 31, 2020.

Industry experts believe these requirements will create significant challenges for farming regions that still rely heavily on smallholder production models and traditional manual record-keeping practices.

Gia Lai Selected as a Strategic Development Area

Driven by the ambition to digitize agriculture, Mr. Nguyen Duc Long, Founder and CEO of FarmBlock, spent significant time conducting field research before selecting Chu Puh district in Gia Lai as one of the company’s strategic deployment areas. The region is considered one of the Central Highlands’ most important coffee-growing zones thanks to its fertile basalt soil and favorable climate conditions.

The company currently manages 295 hectares of agricultural land in Gia Lai, focusing on high-quality Robusta coffee cultivation combined with durian and pepper intercropping. Of this total, FarmBlock has successfully operated a 20-hectare high-tech farm in Chu Puh district. Building on this foundation, the company is accelerating the expansion of its farm management system across larger areas to establish a clean, traceable raw material supply chain capable of fully meeting strict international export standards.

The company’s long-term vision is to develop an agricultural operating model driven by field data while combining local farming experience with modern management technology.

FarmBlock Develops a Four-Layer Agricultural Data Infrastructure

To manage hundreds of hectares efficiently, FarmBlock has developed an integrated four-layer digital infrastructure instead of relying on fragmented technology tools.

IoT Sensor Layer: Smart sensors operate continuously in the fields, measuring more than 20 environmental indicators, including soil moisture, nutrient levels and microclimate conditions.

Real-Time Camera Monitoring Layer: A network of live-stream cameras integrated with AI technology monitors crop conditions and helps detect abnormalities or early signs of disease remotely.

Digital Twin Layer: Each farming plot is digitally mapped and assigned specific geographic coordinates, creating a digital replica of the farmland for operational and asset management purposes.

Mobile Application Layer: A dedicated platform that digitizes the entire cultivation process from planting and fertilization to irrigation and harvesting, allowing managers to coordinate field operations remotely while generating transparent production records for export traceability.

Building a Global Partnership Ecosystem

Alongside the development of its digital farming infrastructure, FarmBlock has also expanded cooperation with domestic and international organizations to standardize agricultural operations according to global standards.

On the scientific and local development side, the company collaborates with the Western Highlands Agriculture and Forestry Science Institute (WASI), the Gia Lai Agricultural Extension Center and the Hanoi Technology Exchange (HanoTEX).

For international auditing and agricultural technology solutions, FarmBlock works with Bureau Veritas, digital agriculture company Koltiva and Israeli crop intelligence company SeeTree.

According to the company, partnerships with research institutes, technology providers and auditing organizations are helping FarmBlock gradually build an agricultural data system capable of meeting increasingly strict export requirements, particularly standards related to EUDR, ESG and GlobalG.A.P.

Toward a Transparent and Sustainable Agricultural Model

As international buyers place growing emphasis on emissions data, traceability and sustainable production, FarmBlock believes data is becoming a core asset in modern agriculture.

“Agriculture does not allow fast-forwarding. One crop cycle takes a year. A wrong decision related to soil, seeds or systems may take years before the full consequences become visible,” said Mr. Nguyen Duc Long, Founder and CEO of FarmBlock.

In the next phase, the company plans to continue expanding its agricultural management model across the Central Highlands while promoting regenerative farming, soil restoration and agricultural data standardization for export markets.

About FarmBlock

FarmBlock Joint Stock Company is an agricultural technology company specializing in large-scale high-tech farming models.
