LOS ANGELES – October 19, 2026 – Independent dark-pop artist Kiki T releases “Terrified,” a new single inspired by Curry Barker’s viral horror sensation Obsession. Written from the perspective of the film’s central female character, the song initially sounds like a nightmare about an irrational, relentless woman completely consumed by a man who doesn’t want her. But beneath the psychological horror lies a far more provocative question: What happens when a man gets the emotional devotion he wanted, only to become terrified of the woman giving it to him?
In Obsession, a young man makes a supernatural wish that forces the woman he desires to fall hopelessly in love with him. Her affection quickly becomes obsessive and dangerous, transforming his romantic fantasy into a nightmare. But Kiki T wants to turn that familiar horror narrative inside out, examining the man’s responsibility for creating the very attachment he now fears.
“What fascinates me most about Terrified is that the story changes depending on who believes they’re the victim,” Kiki T explains. “For decades, men have painted women as the ultimate nightmare. Too emotional and too dramatic.”
Beyond the film’s supernatural premise, “Terrified” examines a familiar contradiction in modern dating. A man deliberately creates emotional attachment through false promises and manufactured intimacy, only to recoil when the woman believes him. Suddenly, her desire for a meaningful relationship becomes a problem. Her expectations are unreasonable, and the man who encouraged those feelings gets to portray himself as the victim of an obsessive woman.
Kiki T takes that contradiction to its theatrical extreme, giving men with attachment issues exactly what they’ve always feared: a woman who’s in touch with her feelings and openly interested in commitment. “She wants to have your babies and might get dramatic if it doesn’t work out,” says Kiki T. “Her supposed monstrosity lies in her willingness to express those desires without pretending she feels nothing. She’s a human being who actually cares.”
The dark humor carries a pointed criticism of a dating culture in which emotional detachment is frequently mistaken for strength, while genuine vulnerability is treated as a liability. Women who openly express romantic desires risk being labeled needy or unstable, even when those desires were encouraged by the people now rejecting them.
The song ultimately questions whether the greater danger lies in romantic obsession or in becoming so fearful of vulnerability that genuine human connection becomes impossible. “Are you really going to live your entire life so afraid of getting hurt that you never actually connect with anyone?” Kiki asks. Its central sentiment captures that philosophy: “There are far worse ways to die. Risk it all to feel alive.”
For all its psychological horror and theatrical exaggeration, the song’s central argument is surprisingly romantic. The greatest terror may not be obsession or commitment, but the possibility of actually having to feel something, especially when those feelings could end in disappointment.
That willingness to embrace uncomfortable emotions also reflects Kiki T’s evolving approach to songwriting. Increasingly bored by the prospect of playing it safe, she is leaning further into provocative storytelling and emotional extremes that make complicated relationships such a compelling artistic vehicle. “Terrified” embraces the messy consequences of wanting someone badly enough to risk getting hurt.
“Terrified” follows “MAD” and the October 1 collaborative single “Final Girl,” released under the Girl Song Presents umbrella. The three songs form part of Kiki T’s horror-inspired release campaign leading into her forthcoming FINAL GIRL EP, planned for Halloween.
For Kiki T, horror provides a theatrical setting to explore recognizable emotional conflicts, letting romance and psychological suspense collide in increasingly provocative ways. Playing it safe has become increasingly boring to her, especially in her songwriting.
“If you’re a hopeless romantic, you’ve come to the right place. If you’re horrified, you’re still welcome.”
“Terrified” is available October 15, 2026.
