Then Miss Ellie, Tommy’s kind neighbor and Grandma Betty’s best friend, notices his sadness. She introduces Tommy to an imaginative possibility. Grandmas in Heaven, she explains, can send love to their grandchildren through magic bubbles filled with hugs and kisses. The idea gives Tommy a new way to understand why he sometimes wakes with rosy cheeks and comforting dreams about Grandma Betty.
From there, Yuki lets the imagination loose. A special machine is created in Heaven to send bubbles to loved ones on Earth. A programming glitch turns a test of the new machine into spectacular bubble chaos, with bubbles surrounding the sun, riding on top of airplanes and floating across the world as children and animals join the fun.
Beneath that playful adventure is a gentle story about remembrance and continuing affection. Tommy eventually realizes that the connection does not have to feel one sided. He creates his own Magic Bubble Celebration Day and sends bubbles toward Heaven for Grandma Betty, as well as for his hamster Harley and his cat Cleopatra.
