NEW ORLEANS – September 2nd, 2026 – Award-winning author, educator, and historian Dr. Artika R. Tyner was a featured author at The National WWII Museum, where she shared her latest children’s book, The Courageous Six Triple Eight, and invited children and families to discover how ordinary people can demonstrate extraordinary courage and change the course of history.
The Courageous Six Triple Eight, part of the Women Warriors of World War II graphic novel series published by Capstone, introduces young readers to the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion, the first and only all-Black Women’s Army Corps unit deployed overseas during World War II. Led by Major Charity Adams, the women confronted racism and sexism while taking on a massive wartime challenge: clearing an enormous backlog of mail and ensuring letters and packages reached American service members in Europe.
Their mission carried a simple but powerful message: “No mail, low morale.” By creating an innovative system to process mountains of delayed correspondence, the women of the Six Triple Eight demonstrated leadership, ingenuity, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to service.
“The story of the Six Triple Eight reminds us that history is shaped by difference-makers. These are people who have the courage to lead, serve, and create solutions even when faced with insurmountable barriers,” said Dr. Tyner. “When children learn these stories, they begin to understand that they, too, have the power to make history and make a difference in the world.”
During the author event, children and families gathered at The National WWII Museum to learn about the women behind this remarkable mission and explore the broader contradictions of the World War II era. While wartime needs created new opportunities for African Americans and women to serve, deeply rooted racial and gender discrimination persisted. The Six Triple Eight confronted these barriers while successfully carrying out a mission vital to the morale of American troops.
The event brought history to life for a new generation, encouraging young readers to see the Six Triple Eight not only as historical figures but also as models of courage, leadership, teamwork, innovation, and service.
Through The Courageous Six Triple Eight, Dr. Tyner continues her work of making history accessible and inspiring for young readers while elevating stories of women whose leadership helped shape America and the world.
