LEONARDTOWN, Md. – August 24, 2026 – Southern Maryland author, U.S. Army veteran, and former combat medic Matt Osborne will release his new military fiction novel, What We Could Not Write Home, on September 1, 2026.
Drawing on more than two decades of military medical service, including firsthand experience with Army aviation and DUSTOFF medevac operations, Osborne has crafted a fictional story grounded in the realities of combat medicine, deployment, and the often-unseen sacrifices carried by military families at home.
Set against the war in Afghanistan in 2009, What We Could Not Write Home follows Specialist Eli Turner, a DUSTOFF flight medic flying high-stakes medical evacuation missions from Bagram Airfield.
Thousands of miles away, his wife and children are living through a very different version of the same deployment. While Eli confronts trauma, exhaustion, and the responsibility of caring for wounded patients in Afghanistan, his family faces the daily strain of separation, uncertainty, parenthood, and the quiet fear that accompanies having someone they love at war.
Letters travel back and forth across the distance, keeping the family connected. But the heart of the novel lies in what never makes it into those envelopes—the fear, grief, loneliness, exhaustion, and experiences both sides choose not to share because each is trying to protect the other.
“The cost of military service is rarely paid only by the person wearing the uniform,” Osborne said. “I wanted to tell both sides of a deployment—the missions taking place overseas and the very different kind of battle being fought by the family at home. Both are carrying something. Both are trying to protect the other. And sometimes what they cannot bring themselves to write says more than the letters they actually send.”
Fiction Grounded in Firsthand Experience
While What We Could Not Write Home is a work of fiction, the military medical and operational world surrounding its characters is one Osborne knows firsthand.
After more than 20 years of military medical service, including deployments overseas and experience with Army aviation and DUSTOFF medevac operations, Osborne drew on the realities of his career to shape the novel’s depiction of battlefield medicine, aviation operations, trauma care, and life during a combat deployment.
Many of the situations portrayed in the novel were informed by real-world missions and experiences. Circumstances, details, and events were altered, combined, or reimagined both to serve the fictional narrative and to protect the privacy of the real patients and people whose experiences helped inform the world of the story.
“This is a work of fiction, but the world behind it is one I knew very well,” Osborne said. “I wanted the medicine, the aircraft, the crews, and the pressure of those missions to feel authentic because they are grounded in more than two decades of experience. Some moments were inspired by things I witnessed or experienced, but the characters and the story belong to the novel.”
That firsthand perspective gives Osborne the ability to write about DUSTOFF operations with technical authority while maintaining a story centered on something broader than the battlefield.
At its heart, What We Could Not Write Home is a novel about marriage, family, service, sacrifice, and the distance between what people endure and what they are willing to tell the people they love.
It is also a tribute to the families behind the uniform—the spouses and children who experience deployments from thousands of miles away and carry burdens that may be less visible, but are no less real.
