There’s a version of the facelift a lot of people quietly want. The tighter jaw, the lifted brow, the fresher look, minus the surgery, the scars and the fortnight hiding indoors. That want is exactly why HIFU keeps coming up. It’s the treatment that gets called “the non-surgical facelift,” and the label is half helpful, half misleading. So we asked Dr Benji Dhillon, the cosmetic surgeon who leads Define Clinic in Beaconsfield, to explain what HIFU actually does, and where the facelift comparison holds up.
Search “HIFU treatment near me”, and you’ll find plenty of clinics offering it. What most of the listings won’t explain is why it works in the first place. HIFU stands for high-intensity focused ultrasound, and the clever part is the layer it reaches. It sends focused ultrasound energy down to the SMAS, the deep support layer of the face, which happens to be the same layer a surgeon lifts during an actual facelift. Getting to that depth without touching the surface of the skin is the whole trick.
The way it manages that is oddly simple. The device heats tiny, precise points deep in the tissue, well below the surface, and leaves the skin on top alone. Your body reads those points as something to mend, and mends them by laying down fresh collagen. Over the following weeks and months, that new collagen firms and tightens the area. No cuts. No stitches. Most people are back to their day straight away, maybe a little pink or tender for a few hours, and that’s about the size of it.
“Because I do surgical facelifts as well, I tend to be pretty straight with people about this,” said Dr Dhillon. “HIFU is a really good treatment for the right person, someone with mild to moderate laxity who wants a subtle lift and doesn’t fancy an operation. What it isn’t is a like-for-like swap for surgery. If the skin has genuinely dropped, ultrasound will only take you so far, and I’d rather tell you that than sell you something that can’t do the job. When it does suit you, though, it’s a lovely option. Gradual, natural, and no real downtime.”
On expectations, patience helps. This isn’t a treatment you admire in the mirror on the way out. The lift builds slowly as the collagen does its work, usually settling over two to three months, and the results tend to hold for somewhere around a year to eighteen months before a top-up makes sense. The session itself takes about an hour. Some people find the deep warmth a little odd or mildly uncomfortable while it’s happening, but it passes, and there’s nothing to recover from afterwards.
