Taimour AlNeimat’s The High Glucose Diet follows Dana Lyle, a writer who turns private exhaustion after a low-carbohydrate experiment into a public defense of the one nutritional villain nobody wants to rescue. Glucose becomes the subject, first as a question in a black notebook, then as an argument that makes scattered nutrition science sound like a hidden medical rediscovery. The essays find an audience hungry for permission to eat after years of restriction. When Oliver builds an online community from Dana’s argument, crucial limits begin turning into rules that people treat like medical guidance. Dana plans to reveal the construction later, but the movement grows faster than her conscience can manage. The novel turns diet writing into medical danger as persuasion moves from a screen into ordinary bodies in a darkly comedic storyline. I admit when I picked up Taimour AlNeimat’s The High Glucose Diet, I thought it was a cookbook. Imagine my delight to find, instead, brilliantly written medical suspense! The author walks us through the fictional evolution of a craze, and how persuasive perfectly curated ‘facts’ can be. We’re also reminded that the internet is forever. The author hammers that home with Mara Chen, the health-and-science journalist who finds Dana’s early forum posts and asks what was removed before the diet became famous. Her reading of a private research ledger turns the book’s scientific argument into a thriller engine. The Kitava entry, based on a Papua New Guinea population used to defend high-carbohydrate eating, shows how Dana selects evidence to strengthen the claims. The author then brings the threat closer through Caroline, a twenty-two-year-old student drawn into Oliver’s High Glucose community, where persuasive diet language feeds her eating disorder. Readers who enjoyed the likes of Robin Cook’s Toxin and Michael Palmer’s The Fifth Vial, and other stories about seductive health movements will just eat this up.”
