The Vietnam War Came Home One Letter at a Time
Letters from Vietnam shares a soldier’s firsthand account of war through letters written while the events were still unfolding

MARIETTA, GA – Most war memoirs are written years or even decades after the fighting ends. Letters from Vietnam is different. Dennis Hoy’s story unfolds through letters written home while the war was still happening, offering readers a rare opportunity to experience events as he experienced them.

Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1966, Hoy arrived in Vietnam in February 1967 and served as an infantryman with the 1st Cavalry Division. Far from home and newly married, he stayed connected to his wife and parents through letters that documented his daily life, thoughts, fears, and experiences in remarkable detail.

Preserved for decades by his wife and parents, those letters eventually became the foundation of Letters from Vietnam. Rather than relying solely on memories reconstructed years later, the book presents a day-by-day account written by a young soldier living through the realities of war as they happened.

In the letters, Hoy writes about combat patrols, helicopter assaults, military training, friendships formed in the field, and the constant uncertainty that accompanied life in Vietnam. Alongside the dangers of combat are moments of humor, personal reflection, and conversations about life back home. Together, they create a portrait of military service that feels immediate, personal, and deeply human.

What emerges is more than a record of military events. The letters reveal the perspective of a young man navigating extraordinary circumstances while holding tightly to the relationships that mattered most to him. They also capture the emotions, routines, and small details that are often lost when history is told only through official accounts.

More than fifty years after they were written, Hoy’s letters continue to preserve a soldier’s voice exactly as it was during one of the most consequential periods in American history. What began as correspondence between a young infantryman and the people he loved became Letters from Vietnam, a memoir that offers readers an authentic and deeply personal window into the Vietnam War. The book is available on Amazon.
