Kisumu signs MoU with Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, Tamil Nadu, India for treating patients in Western Kenyan County

Governor Anyang Nyong’o Lauds Dr. Sampath, Naruvi for facilities, says lot to learn from here

Kisumu County, one of the 47 counties of Kenya, on Friday signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, to treat patients in areas like radiology, neurology, cancer treatment, and internal medicine among others.

The MoU was signed between Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, and Prof. Anyang Nyong’o, Governor of Kisumu County and former Kenyan Cabinet Minister for Planning and National Development, and Cabinet Minister of Medical Services.

Lauds Naruvi Hospitals:

The MoU, Prof. Nyong’o, said was an important stage in development of medical and health care services for people back home in his Kisumu County, located in Western Kenya. Stating that Kenya and India historically had close ties on many areas of cooperation, he said that a number of Kenyans had been coming to India for several years seeking quality health care.

The MoU with Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, Prof Nyong’o said, was the first step towards greater cooperation between the hospital and his Kisumu County where people with complicated ailments were in need of quality medical care. On the facilities at Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, the Governor of Kisumu said “we are more than satisfied. We will begin with sending patients from Kisumu to Naruvi Hospitals for treatment and our government will bear the cost of treatment. We hope to start sending patients here in less than 3 months.”

Lot to learn from Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore:

Prof. Nyong’o said that India had made tremendous contribution to the world of medicine, especially in pharmaceuticals. “We have to learn first-hand from India and from institutions like Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore” he remarked.

Dr. Sampath said that the Kisumu County delegation had spoken about the great demand for specialized treatment and care in areas like bone marrow and cancer treatment. Kisumu would be hosting an international conference in September this year and Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, in addition to taking part in it, will be playing a greater role in expanding its training and treatment services there.

Dr. Sampath said that Naruvi Hospitals, Vellore, offering finest health-care through state-of-the-art medical infrastructure and innovative practices is also the most-sought after destination for patients from England, New Zealand, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, Sudan, Maldives, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Bhutan, among other countries, in addition, patients from Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and other North Eastern States, West Bengal, Chattisgarh, Bihar, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, and Kerala.

Kisumu is 2nd Mumbai:

Dr. George Rae, Chief Executive Officer of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, said theirs was the largest teaching facility and hospital in western Kenya, yet they were in need of specialists, especially in areas like radiology, internal medicine, neurology, cardiology, ophthalmology, ENT, and cancer treatment. Dr. Rae said that they would like to have an early start in these areas initially, but a strategic relationship in all areas of health care and training of doctors and medical staff eventually.

Dr. Rae also elaborated that they would like to have stronger ties with India through institutions like Naruvi Hospitals in the area of single cell diseases, that was causing a huge burden on Kisumu, in addition to bone marrow transplant. He said that Kisumu was also known as “2nd Mumbai” owing to the large population of people from India who had settled down in the last century and now became citizens and an integral part of Kisumu.

Mrs. Dorothy Nyong’o, wife of the Governor and Managing Trustee of Africa Cancer Foundation, Dr. Gregory Ganda, County Government Minister in charge of Health, Kenya, Eddy Illah, Technical Advisor in the Office of the Governor, Kenya and Ahmed Tinai, CEO Vidapharma Limited Kenya, were also part of the delegation.

Ms. Anitha Sampath, Vice Chairperson, Dr. Paul Henry, Executive Director, Mr. Manimaran, Chief Operating Officer, Mr. Nithin Sampath, General Manager were also present.
